The defensive nature of their surnames makes the relationship between Christabel LaMotte and Maud Bailey inevitable.~
Throughout the text castles are alluded to and imagery drawn upon. Maud and Roland work within the Victorian Gothic pile, Seal Court, where Christabel had seen herself as a witch.
